We identify needs and work to find possible solutions
What we do Design for the World works in partnership with various organisations, ranging from grass-roots associations to international humanitarian organisations and governmental agencies. With these groups, we identify their needs –a need for an improved environment, a suitable tool, better communication or teaching materials– and work to find possible solutions.

THE DESIGN FOR THE WORLD METHODOLOGY

The Design Brief is developed in collaboration with experienced designers and the final user to clearly define the parameters of the project. Depending on the project, we select designers from our existing database, or we launch wider calls for help in our newsletters, on our web site, and through our network of founding members and partner organisations. Proposed design solutions are analysed by the Design for the World team together with the users and when necessary, by outside experts.

The Design Process involves volunteer designers developing an idea, a design or a prototype in their studios or online in our internal project space, supported by the Barcelona based team. This team facilitates communication between the designers and the final users, and gathers additional information when necessary. Our Project Board provides a space for designers to share their ideas.

The Result may include specifications for a new product, or plans and manuals for small-scale production in local workshops. In the case of graphic design, the end product may be a simple logo, a style sheet or a complete graphic identity card. Concepts may be developed further, sometimes into prototypes to be tested in the field.

Designers working as volunteers on our projects agree to cede intellectual and industrial property rights. Their ideas will be placed in the public domain so that those in need can use them, without undue restrictions or profits for third parties. Our voluntary designers retain one inalienable moral right –the right to say that they have contributed to our projects, and consequently improved the living conditions of people in need.
