Design can help humanitarian organisations attain their objectives
Who we are Design for the World represents a large number of designers (graphic, product, architectural, etc.) who want to use their experience and creativity to help people in need. They want to make available their skills to those who most need them, beyond the confines of the consumer market.

WHY DESIGN?
Design is closely identified with consumer products and services, and is usually considered irrelevant to people in the third world, in emergency situations or in situations of social exclusion.

In fact, design is the process through which the visual, material and spatial environment is created. Designers are trained to ensure that the world we live in is consistent with human needs.

For big parts of the world’s population, these needs are very basic: they involve disaster relief, health, education, development. Many organisations around the world try to deal with those needs. In most cases, they do not recognize the contribution that design could make to improve their ability to achieve their objectives more efficiently, effectively and economically.

The objective of Design for the World is to identify areas where professional design can make a difference, and mobilize design professionals to work in those areas.

HISTORY
Design for the World was founded in 1998 by the world’s leading international design associations ICOGRADA (graphical design), IFI (interior architects) and ICSID (industrial design), with the support of the Barcelona Design Centre.

Since 1998, hundreds of designers have supported our organisation and participated in our projects as volunteers.
